CALIFORNA, SALTON SEA, November 2023

Salten Sea:

A man-made lake that used to be a haven but has become a toxic waste. Due to agricultural runoff, tailwater, and the Colorado River itself, about 4,000,000 tons of dissolved salts enter the Salton Sea every year. The smell radiating off the lake is something even those with iron stomachs can barely stand.

The Slabs:

When the sea was in its heyday, Bombday City was built. For the people who stayed after the sea was contaminated, another town was built, known as The Slabs. It is an off-grid, unincorporated community often called "the last free place in America.

Salvation Mountain :

A famous, man-made, 50-foot-high, 150-foot-wide art installation in Slab City, near Niland, California. Created by Leonard Knight over 28 years using adobe clay, straw, and countless gallons of latex paint, it serves as a "God Is Love" monument decorated with murals, trees, and scriptures.
